Sometimes they genuinely are concerned, but other times it could be a case of being a nosey parker. It can be annoying, and for some (myself) it can fluster. But a someone wise told me obliquely that sometimes the best answer is silence.
Truly, it's often alright to point out that it is not appropriate to ask certain questions. I'd say learn the art of deflecting probes, it will help.
